Virginia Anne Carter Gatewood

Virginia Anne Carr Gatewood was an important community figure who was born in the lush rolling hills of Albemarle County April 04, 1944. “Anne” was the youngest of 11 children who learned early that she had to be independent; to chart her own course. She was confident, enthusiastic, energetic, hard working and generous.

It was through her moral upbringing, the respect and solidarity she fostered with her Jackson P. Burley High classmates and a faith in God who governs all that she began to solidify her course in life. She was a dedicated individual who was blessed with a gift of bringing people together, leading them and raising awareness to important topic or events. More importantly, she was a selfless woman who was always willing to lend a helping hand to ensure that someone else’s way could be brighter and more fulfilling.

Virginia Anne Gatewood left this Earthly realm unexpectedly on October 30th, 2014. Her presence is missed each and every day but her memory and history of good works will live on through the lives she has and will continue to touch.

The co-scholarship that has been established will encourage every young person, who is open to the challenge, to reach outside of themselves to lend that helping hand to a friend, a teacher a family member; perhaps, even a stranger. Each time they do this, they will reap so much more than they could ever imagine. This is the fellowship that will help to transform our children, our communities and our nation so that all can live free, confident lives with purpose and direction.
